Beyond Nonprofits: Alternative Paths for Social Impact

Alternative paths for social impact, but don't always mean start a nonprofit.
My Nonprofit Journey
I used to have a nonprofit myself, driven by a passion for environmental sustainability. It was a great time - I taught and coached over 20 industrial design students to help think of practical ways to design products better for our planet. It was also a labor of love, meaning I didn't make any money doing this. That experience taught me something valuable: doing good doesn't always require filing for nonprofit status and managing a board. I learned about the nonprofit industrial complex much too late in my journey, and I want to share what I discovered.
The Real Question: Impact vs. Structure Let's start at the beginning: why do people want to start nonprofits? Usually, it's because they want to do good in the world. But here's what I've learned - you can create positive change without a specific tax status. The key is addressing something important first: ego.
Ask yourself this crucial question: Do you want this to be a program known and run by your brand, or do you simply want it to exist in the world? Your answer will guide your next steps.
A Better Path
Fiscal Sponsorship If you want to tie this program into work you're already doing - whether through your for-profit business or just in your general life - consider fiscal sponsorship. I recently shared this option with a client who was thrilled to learn about it. Here's why it works:
It's a starting place for receiving program funding
It involves partnering with an aligned nonprofit
While agreements take time to establish, they're often worth it
Yes, building a relationship with a nonprofit partner might take as long as filing for your own nonprofit status. But here's the difference: you won't be left with the long-term responsibilities of managing a nonprofit. You can focus on creating impact instead of managing paperwork.
The Alternative Approach
I'm not promising a magic solution - this alternative path still takes work. But when done right, it won't dilute your vision or create unnecessary administrative burden. Instead, it lets you focus on what matters most: making a difference.
